Effective Induction Policies to Enhance the Teaching Profession in Europe
The Conference emphasizes the importance of the professional induction phase and acknowledges its crucial role in shaping the future of the teaching profession. European research highlights the challenges faced by teachers, such as a lack of support, social recognition, and adequate preparation, particularly in the early years of their careers. Induction programmes are vital in responding to these challenges, bridging the gaps in initial teacher education, and connecting theory with practice. Induction comprises systematic and collaborative processes of professional development, where experienced teachers act as mentors, guiding and supporting their colleagues.
The Conference highlights the need for formal training for mentors and the transformative impact of certified mentor training programmes on shaping the teaching career. The results of LOOP model – a Teachers‘ Induction Programme based on a Mentoring Programme – will be presented and discussed. The model seeks to contextualize national European differences and provides a valuable tool for education systems to support beginning teachers in adapting to the new workplace culture.
The Conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative discussions, and actionable insights between different stakeholders (e.g., teachers, mentors, policy-makers, researchers, teachers training centers, national education administrations, school leaders) that will contribute to the advancement of effective induction and mentoring practices for teachers across Europe.
